NEW STARS ON ICE

Figure Skating Worlds coming to Tokyo in March

After the Americans and the Europeans held at the end of January, the season has entered its final phase. The next season of Olympics are time to change of generations especially for the ladies skaters this season.

Slutskaya’s Withdrawal, Generations Change in Euros

The Euros finished with Kostner’s first won, 2nd Meier, 3rd Korpi. Slutskaya withdrew this season. It was their first podium except Kostner’s 3rd last year.

The bronze medalist Korpi’s father coached the Finnish womens’ ice hockey team to the bronze medal at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano. She believes that the breakthough for the Finnish women’s team has been the new system of marking. According to AFP,
“In Finland we practice a lot of basic skating, steps, spins and spirals, not just jumping. Maybe you can see it now in the components scores. ” she told.

Tappara’s hockey team honored Kiira Korpi today for her European Championships bronze-medal before the home game against TPS from Turku.

kiira_flowers.jpg

The Tappara figure skater gathered all the media attention at Hakametsä rink although Tappara and TPS were fighting for points in the league. She recieved flowers and gave a press conference while game went on.

Korpi told that she hasn’t been on ice since Warsaw, all time has gone to school work and resting.
– Now it’s time to start training again, there’s only six full weeks before the World Champs in Tokyo.

The 18 year old Tappara-girl doesn’t even dream about medal.
– Last time I was 10th, I’m happy if I can achieve that. The level at Worlds is so much higher than in the Euros because of the North American and Asian skaters.

Kiira is already waiting the trip to Japan.
– I went there for an invitation competition last spring, but didn’t have any time to see the country. Hopefully this time there’s more time to see the places than last time.
– But the overflowing friendliness and politeness of the people there became clear to me from the first moment on.

Tappara won the game 3-0.

kiira_flowers.jpg
