Finland will celebrate its 90th independence day on December 6th. The most important and prestigious event of the evening is the traditional Independence Day Reception at the Presidential Palace. War veterans, politicians, ambassadors and people in influential positions in the society are regular guests every year, but also commons Finns who have succeeded in diffrent areas of life and made Finland known around the world during the ongoing year are honored with invitations to the party. These include among others all kinds of artists and athletes. President Tarja Halonen is a big supporter of artistic and aesthetic sports, so gymnasts and figure skaters have been seen among the guests quite often. Susanna Pöykiö celebrated the independence day in the Presidential Palace in 2005 and a bronze medal in the 2007 European Championships earned Kiira Korpi an invitation to the party this year.
Update: Also Susanna Pöykiö, who had to withdraw from NHK Trophy because of back problems, has received an invitation to the party.
Every year the reception is televised live and it’s always one of the most viewed tv broadcasts of the year. The reception starts with the President shaking hands with every one of the almost 2000 guests and then continues with eating and dancing. For those women who arrive the party alone a group of cadets are available as dancing partners. Who’s the lucky one? Members of the media are also present interviewing the guests live on television. After the official reception the guest scatter around Helsinki to various unofficial after parties. And on the next day the most talked about subject on the media is the dresses the women guests were wearing, and every website has a “queen of the palace” votings. Kiira on the other hand has to travel to Rauma on the next day for the Finnish Championships on 8-9th of December.

Update: Iltalehti had a short preview article.
Kiira Korpi is competing of becoming the most photographed beauty of the party in a revealing silk dress. It has been designed and sewed by Elina Kivioja who is also the maker of Kiira’s skating dresses.
– I can just say that the dress is very light and quite revealing. Color of the dress remains secret until the party, but it will suite the slender blond beauty, says Kivioja.
