It wasn’t the emotionally easiest weekend for Kiira, quote from Aamulehti:

Grief kept Kiira’s thoughts with her friend
Yesterday Korpi’s thoughts were with her best friend whose father had passed away on friday.
– At the moment it feels so futile to think about this competition. There are so much more important things in life, told Korpi in tears.
The emotional discharge after the competition and worries about her friends well-being formed a stream of tears on the skaters cheeks.
– I’m not crying because of the competition. It was hard to stay focused when I would have wanted to be there for my friend. But she encouraged me to go on with the competition.

The Finnish Figure Skating Association will confirm the team for European Championships later this month, but unless something dramatic happens the team will be Laura Lepistö, Kiira Korpi and Jenni Vähämaa for ladies and Mikko Minkkinen for mens discipline. Three of these four skaters are first-timers in ISU Champioships, for Kiira this will be her fourth time.

The battle was very close between Lepistö and Korpi (only 0.36 points). But to be honest, Kiira’s consistency in free skate has left a lot to hope for during this season, so I think Laura deserved this championship fair and square. Kiira’s short program on the other hand has been very good throughout the fall, in four competitions she has missed only one jump in Zagreb. And now there’s good time to sort out the problems in the free skate program before the latter half of the season.

Before the season the Finnish Figure Skating Association set the criteria for choosing skaters to the European Championships. In short, the selection is made in the order of seasonal best (SB) scores to which scores from ISU sanctioned international competitions and scores from the national championships are counted to. Selected skaters have to have participated in at least one international senior competition during the fall. Last year Drei was selected over Lepistö because Lepistö had competed only in junior competitions prior to the nationals. But this year the SB-list after nationals looks as follows:

1. Laura LEPISTÖ 164.76
2. Kiira KORPI 164.40
3. Jenni VÄHÄMAA 163.29
4. Susanna PÖYKIÖ 162.26
5. Alisa DREI 139.30

If the association follows the criterias it has set, it means that Pöykiö 🙁 and Drei will not make it to the Team Finland for the European championships. Two best skaters from the Euros will be selected for the World Championships. But the association haven’t yet made any official announcement about this matter.

1. Laura LEPISTÖ/
2. Kiira KORPI/
3. Jenni VÄHÄMAA/
4. Susanna PÖYKIÖ/
5. Alisa DREI/
