Kiira wrote that she is training hard on basic training for theree weeks…so that I suppose she’ll leave for Toronto the second June week…and I think she’ll stay for two weeks at least..
Her new choreographers are Shae-Lynn Bourne and David Wilson. Wow! Wilson is a choreographer of Yu-na Kim and Dube/Davidson, Bourne is a choreographer of Joannier Rochette. This might be a really good kick to Kiira’s career! I’m soooo excited already 🙂
I think she realises that these four years befor Sochi are absolutely croucial….her new manager works very well…good knowledges and international look of the sport…Kiira looked well about him..
It’s also probably Kiira will spend many weeks abroad with these two corographers
In my opinion, choosing a famous staff it doesn’t automatically means getting better results: as we italians very well know, also Carolina Kostner went for a long time to America for her training, but results just haven’t been so good…
I think Nelli always did a really good job, and main problems of Kiira’s programs didn’t stay on her coreographies at all… for me, a critizable choice.
I understood Kiira is not going to train long times in Canada (Toronto), just to make new choreographies. Of course the famous name doesn’t mean better results but if you want to be on the top, everything must be good. Kiira’s programs have been ok but she didn’t achieve the same atmosphere as eg. Laura in her tango program and I think one reason of that is the choreography of the program. Here’s the LP of Dube/Davison of this season http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2g-ULRx5w8 and I think it’s really a masterpiece of David Wilson! If he gets that feeling to Kiira’s programs, we’ll see something unforeseen.
Well Anna, only time will tell…
I think, doing some names, Laura’s choreographers (McLean/Nirhamo) are very very good, ’cause they helped her to get third place (!) at World Championships: why Kiira don’t choose them, for example? I suppose they’re excellent professionals: why spending money and time travelling to Toronto? Which guarantees they can give her? Their experience? Well, no doubt David Wilson and Shae Lynn Bourne are great coreographers, but… they did same job also for athletes they didn’t reach the top, or not? And single is so different from pairs and ice dance… with Andrew Poje and Kaitlyn Weaver, where’s all their ability gone? Where their magic wand was? They’re not the only ones… so, Igor Shpilband and Marina Zoueva are almost magicians?
Yu-Na Kim won ’cause she’s the one and only, natural and absolutely not-builted talent: Brian Orser, a great coach indeed, never could won the Olympics, coaching Sarah Hecken (with all my respect for Sarah, of course)…
And yes, attractive music, wonderful (but… are we really sure?) choreography… then a fall on her first triple jump: ahi ahi Kiira, maybe it’s worth spending more attention (and hours…) on your technical skills, than other details…
I understand your point but I disagree some things. I don’t know why Kiira doesn’t use McLean, maybe it would be a little bit unpolite or uncorrect to use the same choreography as her worst rival in Finland. I don’t know about that, I don’t know that well the unwritten rules of figure skating. Wilson is a very well-known choreographer also among single skaters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Wilson_%28figure_skater%29) so I wouldn’t doubt his skills.
Of course the skater makes the whole hard work and if you can’t jump, your choreography won’t help you. Of course I know that! But if you have a good program, it helps you to get higher score. Why didn’t Kiira get higher score in Vancouver even though she had almost clean program (only one jump doubled)? Her choreography score has never been too high. And good program is the key to high component score, to transitions, to performance/execution, to choreography, to interpretation…
Kiira knows all the tricks probably better than Laura (whose lutz is quite unsure and no flip at all) but I think the problem is between ears. She needs some mental training which helps her to make clean programs. After all that is the ability that winner has to have.
Well, personal skills of David Wilson are not in doubt, Anna: my thought is it didn’t worth spending much time (and much money!) moving to Canada, ’cause there’re so many excellent choreographers also in Europe, and in Finland too! Why Canadian school should be better than Finnish school? Which results got Canadian athletes better than Finnish ones? Talking about pure choreography, Finland didn’t win just this year World Championships of Synchro in Colorado? And Synchro is higher expression of choreography, I suppose… Why grass is always greener on the other side? My idea is Kiira talked about that to Yu-Na, during past “Festa on Ice”, and Yu-Na advised her coreographer: but, tell me, don’t you think Yu-Na Kim should won the Olympics with every other coreographer…?
Just here, didn’t we always tell that Laura hasn’t got so many difficulties in her programs, less than Kiira in any case, but she does very well all things she plains to do (choreography included)? My idea of taking same choreographers it was only an example, of course… however, I always thought Laura doesn’t represent her “worst rival”, but only a good friend, and I believe I can’t go wrong with it. Anyway…
did you remember summer she spent in Estonia, few years ago, with a “guru” named Myshkin, or something like that? Which astounding results with? And her summer camps in Spain, USA…? I think she maybe should travel less, and more practice on ice… or when she got third place in Warsaw her whole staff was “the top”, and now it has become only an incompetent crowd?
We all hope better things for Kiira, but this doesn’t mean to approve all her choices… wishing her well, it doesn’t mean that.
Anyway, talking to you it’s always a pleasure Anna, ’cause you’re a polite and competent person.
Kiira’s results still leave me unsatisfied. So: Change we need! (and I don’t like Obama :))
I think it can give her new energy, new motivation and let’s hope self-confidence and good luck! As I said: Change we need! 😉
Thanks Northeagle, it’s also good to talk with you, you have good arguments!
I don’t know much about synchronized skating, for me it’s too messy and too theatrical sports – so I can’t say could their chorpographist be good for single skating. That’s true – Finland is very good synchro country. But Finland hasn’t been on the top of single skating ever, that’s why I think getting a new experienced choreographist could be a good choice for Kiira. BTW, Maria McLean is not Finnish, she is from Denmark if I remember right.
And you’re right, Kiira and Laura are friends, which is excellent. It was just a phrase, “the worst rival”, which is however true because they two are the only one on the top of Finnish figure skating at this stage.
I think Kiira was during last season still picking the bad fruits of season 08-09. She had to start really from the begin after that leg disease and she probably wasn’t still as in good shape as she could be. Let’s hope she’ll stay healthy and would develope more and more. Maybe new motivation, much practising, everything good!
