Analysis of a season

I collected results of past Kiira’s season: I divided them in SP and FS.
Sometimes, base value for an element was different from usual: numbered notes are referred to the value in that competition. I also added an average of Components of Kiira during all last season.
All data took from ISU (http://www.isu.org): note “dg” means “downgraded jump”.

No doubt: Kiira has at her bow some “strong weapons”, like Spirals Sequence and final Combination, and her Triple Loop is also very good. Everybody can make their own deductions from these numbers, but one thing is for sure, and I persist on my thought:
it seems choreography it hasn’t been for sure first of her problems, at all…
moreover, Kiira, what about Transitions? And linking steps? But, above all, I think she should work on her Performance/Execution… that’s the gap with the top, in my opinion.
I’d be interested in your opinion, Anna, ’cause I think you’re a competent person: what do you think about?

Well, first of all, this score table is very interesting and very time-taking to make – thanks for it, Northeagle! Well, I’m not a professional in scores, actually I really don’t know what is eg. the difference between 6.45 and 6.50. But as I said earlier, I think the good choreography is the key to almost all component scores – to transitions, performance and interpretation. In poor choreography transitions are bad and the program doesn’t fit to the skater. But I base my arguments only to how I feel and see so that’s why this is not really professional opinion. Kiira’s component score are ok here when not comparing to anyone else but that’s the point, she should have better component score like her rivals do. For example in olympics her component score were over 9 points less than Laura’s! So what I mean – she had almost a clean program, only one loop was singled, she couldn’t reach higher PCS. And I think the main reason is that the program didn’t fit her. The tango program couple of years ago was a good example of a program which was very suitable for her. That’s why I’m just glad to this possibility that very very experienced choreographer can see her strengths and weaknesses.

The olympic FS score is here: http://www.isuresults.com/results/owg2010/owg10_Ladies_FS_Scores.pdf

Also one way to achieve is to make all the elements cleanly. Even though Laura doubled almost all of her jumps in Torino, she made them all cleanly and got no minus GOE at all. http://www.isuresults.com/results/wc2010/wc10_Ladies_FS_Scores.pdf

What I really think, Kiira needs new programs, some mental training and of course jump repeats after repeats. But remember, I’m only the big fan of figure skating, I have no clue of the system of training and so on. I wish we could see clean programs and mores success in competitions next season!

Yes Anna, I agree with almost all things you said. But I never thought choreography wasn’t important, and I even could understand her desire to change programs and her enthusiasm for a new experience too: what I really don’t understand is her choice to make it abroad, and all this time spent travelling and days lost adapting to jet-lag… nothing saying about money (though with heavy help of her sponsors, for sure). He’s 21 y.o. girl, her interest in making new experiences is absolutely understandable. Maybe real need and utility didn’t justify such a decision… it should be great knowing who has got this idea, but it’s too late now.
Maybe because, since I’m italian, I just saw results of “mental coaching” with Carolina, who can say… but all of this don’t convinced me. “Jumps repeated and repeated”… yes, yours are holy words. That’s the way, the only way. Laura in Torino (but in general, during her whole season) made a very very intelligent choice: in my opinion, perhaps Kiira could make something similar, that’s all. Laura’s the proof it’s possibile achieving great results in that way.
