Strange competition: really high level, with Kiira’s PB in FS, and a total score quite close to her top. So, great news? I think not so good.
I already said it many times in the past: her skill on Flip is terrible, that kind of jump costs too much, too often. And two spots for Finland are saved with just a miracle: limit was 28, but luckily a quibble in the rules avoided a hoax.
In the end, a great season for Kiira: but could be even better. Really bad luck on Euros and Worlds…
The top ladies are in their 180’s and 190’s nowadays. Kiira did all right, she was up against the best in the world. I’m worried about Kim Yuna, she seemed to be too thin, to have lost strength. If you lose muscle mass, that will also lessen your strength. Kim should eat more. Look at Tessa Virtue–in top shape, and a great skater. In fact, I would venture to say that Virtue and Moir were the best skaters at Worlds this year. And Czisny has announced she’ll be back for next year!
I think Kiira’s problem is that she also seems to think that these “failures” are just bad luck. But they aren’t, the problems is her nerves. She always says in interviews that she is a really good competitor and does her best in high pressure situations, however that no longer is the case. She probably was like that when she was younger but in recent years it’s been quite the opposite. Before she can do anything about it, she should acknowledge where the real trouble is, and that is her nerve control, which is non existent. She could easily score over 180 if she was able to perform the way she undoubtedly does during practise but in competition she gets too nervous to perform well. And she always says “I don’t know what happened”. Well you should. Alissa Czisny has the same problem, they are so called headcases. Which is a shame because Kiira is a really good skater.
Yes Wanda, I agree with most of the things you said. I always thought this Kiira’s passion for Katanga Yoga was because of the attempt to better control her nerves; well, it seems it didn’t work too well. She certainly has a strong character and strength of will, ’cause it’s absolutely not easy reacting after a bad fall or a mistake during an important competition, whereas she did it many times in the past: maybe Susanna and Maaret are not the top for helping her, from this point of view.
In the TV pictures it looks like Kiira’s coach always would be taking Kiira’s failures personally, as if Kiira should skate for her! That kind of lack of support can not gain Kiira’s success and encourage her to optimal performances. Is it due to the ancient Finnish authoritarian attitude which means threatening and frightening? No-one can develop her/his nerves with those methods…
President Obama just announced that the US killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan. Worlds, Prince William marrying Kate, bin Laden killed. What a weekend.
The coach that always looks like she’s swallowed a lemon is Susanna, the other one, Maaret, whome I’ve seen most of the times in the k&c with Kiira, seems to be much more sympatethic and supporting. Susanna barely looks at Kiira when she’s done something wrong. Wouldn’t want her as my coach.
I decided to leave you, inhabitants of this fine site. My last will is: throw not a soapy cord of help to her.
For commonwealth!
she is blond and she will allways fail … but she is blond and beautiful … and the last 2 points are the score why she is loved ….
Hi everyone,
@Mandy: Your statement is not fair at all. Kiira is blonde and yes, Kiira is beautiful. At the same time she is one of the best skaters in the world. After all she made top ten every so often in different competitions over the last 5 years. Or would you consider only the 3 medalists of being good skaters?? Well, Kiira won Paris TEB 2010, to name just one event.
Kiira wouldn’t be ranked No. 5 (out of over 200 skaters listed) in the ISU world rankings if she weren’t a top skater. All of us here in the Kiira-Korpi-fan-community love Kiira because of who she is – blonde, ravishingly beautiful AND a VERY GOOD skater.
Aside from being blond, beautiful and a great skater, Kiira also puts dramatic structure into her programs. Her ‘Butterfly’ is fantastic. Kiira has always given noteworthy, remarkable performances. Her dad is a skating coach, so Kiira has skating in her naturally. It’s her girl-next-door look that makes her so attractive to the guys. She’s the kind of girl they want to marry.
I think Mandy doesn’t deserve an answer, so I won’t waste my time about that.
I agree with Eric and Mike, with only an exception: her father, Rauno, has never been a skating coach, but a hockey coach. I remember him when he worked in Austria, I saw him on the bench for Alpenliga tournament, against italian teams.
Kiira made enormous progress in her career: her speed of execution is unbelievably improved during the years, even if she still seems to have got a bone to pick with Flip… but in the beginning of this season, she told that her main goal was to be in the first six better skaters in the world, and she did. Moreover, we love her for her education, ’cause she’s mild-mannered, for her “girl next door look” (you’re absolutely right, Mike), and for her simplicity and power to take worst disappointments with dignity…
sometimes, even for her tears.
I think she has to be faster in the execution of the midline. Everything else is beautifull a Kiira, a kind of beauty that is really difficul to find in a skater.
I didn’t like Yu Na’s skating this year, I dont’n know why.
her coach has never waited her after the program, no kisses or hugs even if the performance was not at her most beautifull. I prefer Maaret rather than Susanna but I’m not sure that they are suitable for Kiira becouse she’s still having problems in the same things (lutz 4 example)and could be a technical problem.
Anyway….it’s simple to train here, just writing 🙂
An atlete is the most important treasure for his coach, but is also a mixture of potential, power, feelings and in most cases an atlete is young and so, in a particular moment of life; training someone is not simple.
I know for sure Susanna has a good feeling with Kiira, and same for Maaret: maybe she’s more “cold” in her public appearances than Maaret, but I suppose that Kiira would has already changed, if she wouldn’t fit with Susanna. And Silvia, sometimes Kiira faced some problems with Lutz, sure, but her timing about this jump is quite good, as Anna noticed in the past too: but nothing compared to Flip… it seems she just don’t digest it, I don’t know why. On the other hand, this kind of jump assures many points, so…
We don’t have to be too hard with Susanna Haarala, she’s a good coach with no doubt, beyond her public behaviour: well, me too, I’ve been touched in the past by thought that maybe Kiira could be trained by other coaches… not necessarily better, but simply with different ways to approach with the athlete. And when Kiira won TEB, she gave a great hug to Susanna…
Right Northeagle, even in tears Kiira is adorable. Good that we have ladies here who join forces with us. Anybody who has ever done sports at the competitive level knows how difficult it is to claim a podium place. And it is equally tough to stay on top. Just look at Mao Asada. She was the defending champion and finished 6th, despite a very good performance. Sometimes it is minor things that have a great influence on performance. Kiira has improved a lot over the years, she still has problems with some technical elements and she’s working on it (the idea of just taking the flip off the programme has struck my mind as well, but that probably wouldn’t be ambitious Kiira). All of us who love figure skating know that there is more to this sport than jumps, it is also an art, and here Kiira is at her best. She brings so much grace onto the ice, her programme is challenging and components are beautifully linked together, Kiira’s transitions, choreography, interpretation are at the top of the game. Beautiful to watch, she really draws your attention on the ice. Her performance in gala shows, though not competition, are world class as well. That is why Kiira has got so many fans not only in Finland and Europe, but in North America and in the Far East as well. [By the way, many thanks to Takashi for bringing up this great website.]
Well, I dont know much about figure skating, but damn I love watch the competitions (mens and ladies), in my country the only sport wich the press talk about it, its soccer, waaaaaaaaggghhhh…
I like the performances of Kiira because, in my oinion, she allways puts her heart in every competition, as somebody wrote before, I think the figure skating is not only jumps, I think its like being in to a theatre, she express a lot without word but she use her moves, like an actress… I think she is great¡¡¡ =)
The Worlds Gala is on Youtube! Check it out. Fantastic show. Czisny has a new EX, great new costume. Yuna seemed exhausted, and Yuna needs to gain about 5 lbs. Once you win Gold at the Olympics what is there left to achieve? She has climbed to the summit. I wonder what Yuna sees from up there. She deserves a two week vacation in the Bahamas.
or maybe at the beaches of Mexico, like Cancun or Playa del Carmen =)
Check out the Internet videos for All That Skate this year. Yuna was back in top form with “Fever” and her other numbers. Alissa Czisny was there too and her “Moon River” was exquisite. Great show! Yuna puts on spectaculars.
