Outch, she looks awesome!
Quick question: who chose the themes/songs for Kiira’s skates at this event? Did she choose them herself, or did like the event people or whatever assign them to her?
Just curious :3
I’m sure she chose her own programs. Kiira skated really solid. She’ll be a contender this season.

Here’s Kiira’s programs for this season: “I Got Rhythm” for the Freeskate and a hip-hop version of “Carmina Burana” for the sp.
I’ve to be sincere: I don’t like too much that song (“I got rhythm“), whereas “Carmina Burana” could fit enough to a skate program. I think audience (and judges) are inevitably involved by a program’s music, so athletes always take care about these choices: maybe isn’t such a novelty, but in my opinion Kiira should skate on songs like “Who wants to live forever“, who create more feeling and suggestion.
Maybe Kiira found a good rendition of “I Got Rhythm”. That first video above, by the way, is not “I Got Rhythm”; I don’t know who is singing what, it’s mislabeled. A good choice of music certainly improves the programme: last year, for instance Alissa Czisny had “elevator music” (probably in order to focus on her skating rather than the music) but this year she’s got “La Vie En Rose” so she’ll probably bring down the house in Paris. I think the girls may choose loud music with a heavy beat so they can hear the music in skating arenas which are not built for good acoustics. “Carmina Burana” was used for the soundtrack for that Civil War movie called “Glory”, it worked really well.
Also, that first video seems to be mislabeled, it isn’t “I’ve Got Rhythm”, it’s a crowd-filmed angle of “You and I”.
Thanks Zero, post corrected!
I thought she kept her old SP? Where did you find out this Carmina Burana hip hop version? I saw somebody mentioned it at Golden Skate forum but that’s the only place I’ve seen that information and I thought it was some misunderstanding. Feels a little bit strange but who knows. Maybe I’m too suspicious.
In fact, Kiira told in July in tv interview that she was in Canada to make a new FS with Shae-Lynn Bourne. She didn’t mention her SP at all so I assume it’s the old (and fabulous) one.
I heard Kiira was coming up with two new programs, so I checked the Wikipedia article on Kiira (it’s usually reliable and up to date) and that’s where I learned she was doing Carmina Burana and I Got Rhythm.
I think maybe it wouldn’t be so great idea changing all programs every year… I agree with Anna regarding her SP, my opinion is that it matched up most important competitions, but so many trips to Toronto mean she’s preparing a new FS with Shae-Lynn, for sure.
I’ve read Kiira has only new FS. Well, maybe I’ve understood wrong. Golden Skate Forum and wikipedia have been the only places I’ve seen this new music. Anybody can update wikipedia so I don’t believe before I see or Kiira tells herself 😉
I read today from the newest number of magazine “Taitoluistelu” (Figure skating) that Kiira is keeping her old SP Over the rainbow. She also told she had had some problems with her old skates in July and her metatarsus was hurt. She couldn’t do flip and lutz properly so she has practised her new FS in August with easier triple jumps. She starts her season in Japan Open. Kiira and Laura were cover girls, looking beautiful as always.
I don’t know if that’s the real reason of Kiira’s change in her FS: but removing Flip it’s been a wise decision, in any case.
I wish she could do all the jumps, it gives her more points eg. in skating skills but flip has been a problem many many times. Probably it’ s better to do easier jump with quality than mess the difficult jump. Possible jump collection could be then eg. 3T-3T, 3Lo-2T, 3S-2T-2Lo, 3Lz, 3Lo, 3S, 3T, 2A. Or if she makes lutzz well, she could make it in combination and solo jump. We’ll see! Can’t wait 🙂
Yes, I agree with most of the jumps and combos you list: but it seems to me she never did in the past 3S-2T-2Lo sequence… while 3F is a kind of jump she never digested too much (only once she was able to perform it very well, at the Olympics in Vancouver). Instead, she could perform 2A and 3S blindfolded…
So, this year no Nebelhorn?
You are right, I meant 3Lo-2T-2Lo sequence which was at last season quite strong. She could also try 2A-3T combination, I think!
Jep, I think so. Besides, in my opinion Kiira could make the same choice of Carolina Kostner: she could take part in three GP’s events this year. Less pressure in case of failure in one of those competitions, and more chances earning points for Finals in Quebec City.
It’s not Kiira’s decision; ISU gives the places to the skaters. And Kiira and many others were given two spots. I didn’t know it’s even possible to take part in three GP events!
Yes, since incoming season each skater has the choice to take part in three GP’s events: but only two better results will be considered for final score. Not only Carolina Kostner already took this decision, but Alena Leonova too.
OK, that’s interesting! The beginning of Kiira’s season is now quite hard: two times to Japan, Finlandia Trophy and Cup of Russia. Also the Finnish Championships in December. Hopefully she is in good shape now!
I went to a YouTube video labeled “Laura Lepisto, Kiira Korpi, Juulia Turkkila–Interview, July 2011” and it stated that Kiira had a new lp, but nothing about a new sp. Kiira has to be the most interviewed female skater in the world, probably more than Yuna Kim. It always seems males watch Kiira on YouTube, not females. (I guess the women are jealous.) Anyway, Kiira’s leg muscles seemed really well developed, which means she’ll do great this season, which begins for her in about a month. What happened to her metatarsus?
I did some research–injuries to the metatarsus are happening to football players because of the new lightweight football shoes, so they’ve developed a rubberized sock to wear. (The metatarsus are the five long bones right after the toe bones.) I’ve always wanted to invent an ice skating boot with shock absorbers to prevent injuries (inflamed bursa, microfractures, etc.). I even heard a rumour that at the last Worlds the Russians had invented a rubberized ice. –Rubber ice? Anybody ever heard of rubber ice?
I sensed Kiira was not in the best of moods, so I checked her mood icon on her website and she was a little down, what with the plane crash in Russia and her metatarsus injury. If she modifies her jumps to give her a more conservative program though, that might mean she skates two clean programs and podiums. I’m sure she’s thinking about her skating strategy for this year. She seems in better shape than Lepisto, I bet Kiira is going to smoke ’em this year.
But, if Kiira will open her season in Japan, on 1st of October, how will she can take part in Finlandia Trophy, in Vantaa, from 6th to 9th of October?
Why not? She flies back to Finland probably straight after Japan Open: 2nd, 3rd or 4th October. And will be ready (and tired) for Finlandia Trophy.
