Unfortunately, Kiira won’t take part in next Worlds in Nice: she still hasn’t got through the injury she suffered at feet and hip.
Here some news:

Wow… really!?
Can’t image the Worlds without Kiira…
Hope her injury is not serious and get well soon!
Well, I usually trust in finnish newspapers… ;o)
Terrible news, really. She already suffered problems at her feet years ago, but this should be different: this injury appeared during European Championships in Sheffield, and in spite of all following cares, it affected even her hip, until today’s decision.
I’ll tell the truth: as far as I know, she should have gone to Toronto for two weeks, finishing off her programs with Shae-Lynn, but this travel never occurred. So, I guessed there were some problems… but I didn’t imagine they could be so serious.
Now her season’s over… she has many months to completely recover (apart from a couple of shows).
(P.S.: I took a look at the season’s dates, in left frame of this site: poor, she skipped more competitions than she did…)
This is so sad. I cant believe that I wont see her this season anymore. She was my nr 1 favourite even though I didnt see her winning a medal. But I was sure that, after the european silver, she will improve her last year Worlds placement.
Worlds without Kiira… cant imagine that. I just hope this injury isnt that serious because it scares me. Look at what happened to Laura, she still hasnt recovered and 2 years passed since then.
This is bad news. I’m beginning to wonder if the new point scoring system is to blame for this. Perhaps skaters are being pushed past their limits. (Race horses suffer broken legs because so much is demanded of them.) Seven triple jumps in long programs now, plus all the practice. That’s a lot of impacts on the ice. I’ve read that the G-forces when a skater lands are enormous. I think it was Jill Trenary who said about 20 years ago that the number of jumps should be limited. The ISU needs to take a look at all this. I don’t like it when skaters get injured.
Älä välitä Kiira, kyllä se siitä vielä lähtee.Hyvää toipumista!
Get well soon, Kiira!!
@mike race horses should be slain if broken
I’m so sad about what I’ve just read in artonice.it… get well soon Kiira
Should be very hard saving two spots for Finland, at Worlds 2013: Juulia should be classified within first 12 positions, and this would be quite a miracle… so, next year Kiira and Laura should dispute each other the only spot available. But it seems likely that following season, in 2014, Finland will gain two spots again, ’cause either one (or maybe both, why not?) will be able to be in first twelve.
But, 2014 will be the Olympics season in Sochi… and in my opinion, Worlds and Olympics in the same year is real madness.
Somebody’s going to have to invent an ice skate with shock absorbers. Little pneumatic pistons in the skate blade itself. Then maybe we wouldn’t be having these injuries. Anyway, the five top contenders at Worlds will now be Alissa Czisny, Kostner, Asada, Leonova and Murikami. Politically, Kostner looks to be slated to win. Her sponsor Lancia-Fiat could insert a lot of money and advertising into ladies figure skating if she wins Gold. Ferrari should be Alissa Czisny’s sponsor. Three more days until Worlds!
Whoops, Suzuki and Ashley Wagner could also podium, so that’s a field of top 7 contenders, with Czisny, Kostner, Leonova, Asada and Murikami.
Worlds underway without Kiira – just very sad… Let’s hope that Kiira will recover completely and will finally be problem free next season!!
In my opinion alongside Kiira Alissa Czisny is the 2nd most expressive lady in figure skating. But as we have seen art is not the dominant factor in the current ISU scoring system. Nevertheless, on a good day, Alissa should be strong enough to make the podium. Carolina has had a great season so far and maybe it should be her turn to finally win the world championship. Tough competition from Mao Asada and Akiko Suzuki for sure, and I should not forget one lady that in my opinion is the prime contender for Gold – Ashley Wagner. Amazing how much Ashley has improved her skating compared to her performance last season. The switch in choaches (or whatever combination of factors) took her to a new level. I don’t see Leonova even getting close to the podium, nor do I think Kanako MurAKAMI will medal. Just a few more days and we’ll find out if Nice 2012 will have any major surprises for us.
“Alissa should be strong enough to make the podium”
“Carolina […] it should be her turn to finally win the world championship”
“…Mao Asada and Akiko Suzuki for sure…”
“…one lady that in my opinion is the prime contender for Gold – Ashley Wagner”
“I don’t see Leonova even getting close to the podium, nor do I think Kanako Murakami will medal…”
1. Alena Leonova (RUS) 64.61
2. Kanako Murakami (JPN) 62.67
3. Carolina Kostner (ITA) 61.00
4. Mao Asada (JPN) 59.49
5. Akiko Suzuki (JPN) 59.38
8. Ashley Wagner (USA) 56.42
16. Alyssa Czisny (USA) 48.31
Eric, remember me never ask you lottery’s numbers… 🙂
LOL Northeagle. That was funny. I’ve watched the short programs for Worlds and there is a definite loss of magic when Kiira isn’t skating. I think the Russkis will be the next big thing in skating, not only do they have Leonova but Lipnitskaia, Sotnikova, Tuktamysheva…what are the Russkis doing to come up with so many great skaters? The ascendancy of the Japanese is waning and the USA has only Gracie Gold coming up. The Russians could dominate the sport in the next few years.
Sorry Northeagle, it looks like I got it all wrong? Putting out some numbers before the competition is more challenging than afterwards.
As I said in my concluding sentence “we’ll find out if Nice 2012 will have any major surprises for us”. Alissa Czisny is in my opinion the biggest surprise after the SP. Alissa has proven on many occasions what she is capable of – she couldn’t do it on THU, it definitely wasn’t her day! I consider Alena Leonova’s SP score in Nice a surprise as well. Good for her that she was able to add 10 P to her short program score and regain steam. Ashley Wagner is off 8 P compared to her mid February performance at the 4CCh. But that’s sport, and surprises like these keep the interest high. Carolina is well positioned and all options are still open. Ashley will probably not be able to repeat her 190s area score this time although she has been a consistent skater this season. Anyway, good luck to all the competitors for the FS tonight. Looking forward to great competition performance.
It’s the ice that’s causing people to fall at Nice! Everybody is remarking on how brittle it is. The damn French screwed up again. There’s 15 phases, or types, of ice (see the Wikipedia article on ice). Doesn’t the ISU regulate the ice temperature and formation at rinks and competitions? There should be a regulation temperature for the ice at competitions. If the ice had been at the right temperature Alissa Czisny would have been at the top after the sp. Alena and Kanako were terrific! With crappy ice the competition is wide open. Anyone can win. The Frenchies have turned Worlds 2012 into a destruction derby.
Alissa Czisny just fell 5 times at Worlds. Somrthing’s not right.
I think we all just witnessed the Worst Skating Disaster in History. By falling 5 times (her PCS scores were still high) Alissa Czisny lost all places for the USA at the next Worlds except for one. With one fell swoop of her hand Alissa Czisny has wiped out the American ladies figure skating team. Only Alissa could have done this.
Whew! Alissa Czisny missed total disaster by only two! Ashley Wagner saved the day with a great Freeskate so that they came in togethet at 26. They needed 28 or lower to retain the two places. That was a nail biting episode. Exciting contest! Congrats to Kostner and Leonova. Kostner, as I predicted, got Gold, thanks to Fiat/Lancia and Ottavio Cinquanta and the ISU (Italian Skating Union). I hope Fiat is happy and gives me a free Lancia. Also, they made that ice brittle for a reason, those Frenchies must have added something to the ice or frozen it wrong. The ice was too hard. Maybe sharpening the ice blades on the skates might help under such ice conditions. Alissa Czisny’s Freeskate was the most dramatic event of the meet. Total atomic meltdown. Brave girl, and more beautiful than God allows.
Of course I was joking, Eric…
and yes, FS has modified the final ranking, so some of your predictions has been respected.
I don’t agree with you, Mike: Carolina won ’cause she’s been the best, in these Worlds, and during all this season. Fiat/Lancia doesn’t jump a triple Lutz, and Cinquanta doesn’t make a 3T+2S combo… I don’t take a liking to Carolina in particular, even if I’m italian, but her talent is blatant and indisputable. All of her jumps took GoE +1 and more, 189,94 is a stunning score. Moreover, with the placements of Kostner and Marchei, Italy gained three spots for next Worlds: if Kiira should decide to change nationality… ;o)
World Team Trophy in Tokyo is on! Gracie Gold is first up in the ladies singles. Gracie will “throw down” in the American vernacular. Those other young ladies will have a hard time trying to match Gracie. Gracie is a blonde bombshell like Kiira, she’s taking off like a rocket alright. She could set international figure skating on fire. The USA and Japan are the favored nations to win. No Finland, alas, the birthplace of figure skating.
